Class Day thoughts – 2019
-- Comments from Nancy Sieffert, officer of the scholarship committee.
Wow! What a great Class Day! More alums attended and more scholarships awarded…and not just from us! Our group was warmly greeted by Dr. Neely Hackett who is Superintendent of Schools for Irvington. There also were refreshments for all guests in the Guidance Office. We were pleased that this year the Junior Class was in the auditorium for the entire assembly and several speakers mentioned that they hoped the juniors would see what was possible for them in their senior year. Once again the JROTC presented the colors and the Star Spangled Banner was song beautifully by one of the seniors. We were treated to wonderful modern dance performances at both the beginning and the end of the ceremony. I’m always impressed at the warm reception the students give to the dancers…..and actually to all their classmates.
We were so happy to be able to present SEVEN scholarships this year thanks to everyone’s generosity! All the winners had huge smiles on their faces when they came forward to receive their award from us. We were pleasantly surprised that there seemed to be many more scholarship awarded this year. An anonymous donor gave the Guidance Office $11,000 to present to 11 students of their choosing. The PBA also gave out scholarships. One of our classmates – Dr. Tom Panitch ’56 – presented scholarships on behalf of the Irvington Chamber of Commerce and the Irvington Springfield Ave. Business Improvement District. The Irvington Varsity Club also presented a scholarship and there was a lot of talk about mentoring which is what is also really needed at HIS.
Alums attending were - Larry Klepner, Martin Jacobs, Nancy Hetz Sieffert, Jane Smakowitz, Connie Smith Thomas, Inge Bass Mills ’60, Ilene Barr Skolnik, Alan Tasoff and Clara Roth ’59, Marjory Rothman Collins’63, Judy Tasoff and Stan Loewenthal ’64, Pat Ahern Cohn ’72, Bob Roberts ’52 and Marion Monteverdi Roberts, Archbishop Walsh ’59. Many of us went to lunch afterward and met for the third year our friends from the Irvington Block Association!
Consider coming next year to Class Day……it’s always special!!
