Similar to the fact that there were no photos for the 2020 ceremony or the 2021 virtual ceremony, we are hopeful that the new year will be photographed.

The Class of 1965 asked if their contributions this year could be used to name one of our scholarships in memory of their class president Maruta Rubens Gardner who died in 2016. We were very happy to award the Maruta Rubens Gardner scholarship to Ashley Moreno.

After graduating from IHS Maruta attended college in Iowa and received a Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California. She served the San Diego Unified School District for over 37 years as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent. She then worked for the San Diego Office of Education and the Juvenile Court system.

Maruta was a supporter of our scholarship and every year took the time to write a note with her contribution thanking us all for our work and support for our alma mater.

She was very active in her home town of Mission Beach, serving for many years on the Town Council and chairing the Graffiti Patrol. She was widely known in the San Diego area as the “Graffiti Eradicator”. On Feb. 12, 2016, as she was working to remove some graffiti from a wall, she was hit and killed by a drunk driver who had just been involved in a road rage incident. There was an outpouring of support for Maruta’s husband and family by the entire San Diego community.
